What is it about research as a career that interests you the most? In which subject area(s) would you like to pursue research? What led you to choose this area of research?

Response to Question 1
Nothing has been enigmatic to me as the cancer, infectious diseases and regeneration in organisms. It all began in my childhood, when I accidently noticed a very peculiar organism which could regenerate itself when cut in pieces. Out of my curiosity, I started to search what these organisms are and why they are able to regenerate and came to know its name as planarians. My curiosities arouse more, when I linked human beings and these organisms which can regenerate. There were questions revolving in my mind about why when our hand is cut we are not able to regenerate new hands, why can’t we regenerate normal cells which can compete cancer cells and why we cannot cure many infectious diseases.

Thanks to my parents for guiding me in a right way to choose my career and helping me in introducing me into the field of science. With a strong belief in the power of interdisciplinary science as a path to chase the truth of universe, I found myself in one of the foremost research institutes for basic research, Indian Institute of Science and Education Research (IISER) Thiruvananthapuram, India. During my majors in IISER TVM, I got opportunities in reading research papers. These papers were very interesting, and I felt to go more deep into research areas. When I had developmental biology, animal physiology and immunology course, I got interested in these courses and came to learn about stem cells, how organisms develop, how cells divide, how it organises itself, how cells regenerate, how signalling between cells happen, how diseases arise and how vaccination helps in preventing diseases, etc. These courses were so fascinating that I was able to link my interests in regeneration, cancer and infectious diseases with these courses.

I had the golden opportunity to work under scientists as part of my summer and winter research projects. My first summer project in IIT Madras under Prof. Nitish R Mahapatra developed my interest in learning basic techniques such as PCR, SDS-PAGE, western blotting and Bradford assay, etc. Further, I did my winter project under Prof. S. Murty Srinivasula, and learnt about signalling mechanism such as autophagy and apoptosis. Currently, I am pursuing my undergraduate thesis under Dr. V. Stalin Raj at IISER TVM. My research focusses on producing a viral like nanoparticle which can be used for producing vaccines against infectious diseases. These nanoparticles can be used in various research fields including cancer, virology and immunology, etc. Being trained in basic scientific principles, I have learned the efficiency of teamwork and experienced the ecstasy of scientific advancements.

As a graduate student I would like to learn advanced research methods including microscopy, CRISPR, apoptosis, Micro RNA’s and genetics, etc. that will help me to analyze more about regeneration, cancer and infectious diseases.

It was always my dream to learn and do research in the field of cancer, stem cells, tissue regeneration, immunology, and infectious diseases. These topics always fascinate me and make me feel more curious. My main interest lies in the cancer research area because, despite improved advancement in biology and decades of research, the treatment for cancer disease has always been a big question mark. These made me more curious and look deeper about cancer disease. I understood that cancer cells are very much intelligent and it has evolved well to survive. It has its ways of escaping our immune system, frequently mutating, becoming resistant to drugs, and metastasizing, which makes it very complex for treatment. There are many causes of cancer which include mutations, genetic alterations, and epigenetic changes, etc. Therefore, I would like to work and understand the regulation and mechanism of how these cancer cells get mutated by various conditions and to look at the receptor or protein factors involved in interacting with the neighbouring normal cells and the ability to metastasize nearby cells.
My main idea is to find the mutated gene and receptors involved in cancer cells using whole-genome sequencing. By knowing the mutated gene, I would like to do knockdown experiments and find the proteins or receptors involved in altering the normal cell to a cancerous cell. Further by developing recombinant nanoparticles carrying drugs or proteins that can target specific genes and block the transition of normal cells to cancer cells, which can be used for the treatment of cancer cells. I would also like to use the characteristic features of stem cells, regenerative tissues, and immunological response to find a solution to treat cancer cells

From childhood I used to dream about doing research in IISc,IIT,IISER,JNCASR,NCCS,NCBS,NIBMG,NISER,BARC.This was mainly due to my father who is working as Senior Principal Scientist in CSIR-SERC and my mother who is working in IIT Madras in the Department of Electrical Engineering. Apart from my parents my own elder brother who is working as Engineering Officer in CPRI Bangalore( BTech from NIT Trichy and MTech from IIT Delhi) mesmerise me into doing research only from the above institutes
