Question 1 What is it about research as a career that interests you the most? In which subject area(s) would you like to pursue research? What led you to choose this area of research? Response to Question 1 I am interested in pursuing research as it will give me the opportunity to involve myself deeply in a subject area that interests me and work with like-minded people who share the same interest. I am also drawn to the relative independence of an academic career and I believe a Ph.D. will provide me with the experience and skills to pursue it. My research interests lie broadly in experimental Condensed Matter Physics and Nanotechnology. I am willing to do both experimental and computational research. I am interested in working on functional materials. This interest stems from reading about their applications in energy-efficient energy and data storage devices. I am also interested in Soft Matter Physics which I would like to understand and explore. Question 2 Describe any project, or laboratory experiment, or research-oriented training programme that you have been involved in. Please highlight the aspects that you particularly enjoyed. Response to Question 2 For my Masters thesis and subsequent project, I worked under Prof. Parongama Sen at Calcutta University and did a numerical analysis of a disordered discrete-time quantum walk that is non-Markovian in nature and found that it exhibits a non-universal scaling behaviour, and identified distinct phases with different scaling. I carried out all simulations using original Fortran code. After my M.Sc., I worked under Prof. Sen as a project student and extended this work, which culminated in an article titled- Persistent quantum walks: Dynamic phases and diverging timescales, that has since been published. I particularly enjoyed the computational aspect of this research. I was able to test my programming skills in Fortran and taught myself LaTeX. I also enjoyed writing and reporting on a subject that was new to me by assimilating information from various sources. Question 3 State the reasons on why you want to opt for JNCASR for your advanced research / academic studies. Response to Question 3 I want to pursue a Ph.D. at JNCASR because of its active research tradition. In particular, the focus areas of research in the Chemistry and Physics of Materials Unit are directly relevant to my own research interests. I am deeply interested in the work of several faculty members of CPMU and would love an opportunity to learn more directly from them. I believe that working here as a Ph.D. student will benefit me a lot as it will help me to refine my interests into focused research objectives and allow me to gain the necessary expertise to work in this field in the future. |
I declare that all the information and entries of marks are correct to the best of my knowledge and belief. If admitted, I shall obey all the rules and regulations of the Centre. | |
