Question 1 What is it about research as a career that interests you the most? In which subject area(s) would you like to pursue research? What led you to choose this area of research? Response to Question 1 I choose research as my career in order to engage me in the creation of new knowledge and skills and it gives me the challenges that make me to think of new ideas, new reasons and new possibilities, it offers constant learning and makes me an expert and hones the problem solving skills. Molecular studies, taxonomical studies, ecological studies and genetics are the areas of my research interest and I would like to pursue in those fields of research. I am fascinated to understand how our bodies function on a molecular and cellular level and it gives better understanding of life in a different way. By exploring the mystery regarding the gene and molecules gives better understanding about the different disorders, diseases and can give the possible remedy. Molecular and genetics studies are more advanced and highly reliable. As a study of relationship between living organism and nature, ecology attracts me because I am a nature lover and eager to learn about the organisms and their relationships. Question 2 Describe any project, or laboratory experiment, or research-oriented training programme that you have been involved in. Please highlight the aspects that you particularly enjoyed. Response to Question 2 My post graduation dissertation entitles the generic diversity of the family Braconidae (Hymenoptera) in Calicut University Botanical Garden. Braconids were collected using different sampling technique like sweeping, yellow pan and malaise trap. Collected specimens were sorted, card mounted, identified and dichotomous taxonomic key for the identification of braconid genera reported from the study area was prepared. The study reported 44 genera over 11 subfamilies of Braconidae in which oriental fauna of Braconidae are enriched by the range extension of a rare genus Neoheterospilus. Besides, the study also reported two genera from Indian subcontinent and nine genera from Kerala for the first time. Most braconid species have the potential to be used as biological control agents due to their nature of parasitizing other insects. When natural enemies are being sought or transferred from one region to another in biological control projects, the correct identification of both the pest and the natural enemy species is of great importance. The new records indicate the possibility of new species which indicate new host and also new biocontrol agent if studies were extended. The data will provide a base line for future studies like pest management and diversity studies. . Question 3 State the reasons on why you want to opt for JNCASR for your advanced research / academic studies. Response to Question 3 JNCASR is one of the leading institutes in India and I would like to be a part of the institution. From my graduation onwards I am very much interested in molecular biology, genetics and evolutionary biology. For seeking a quality research, JNCASR will be the top ranked in my list because of the importance and attention given to the research by the institute. I would like explore the facilities and knowledge that offer by the institution with the help of the mentors. By the impressive intellectual and technical resources of a prestigious research university, JNCASR would provide me the confidence of knowing that I would be getting the most forward-focused education in biology. The quality education offered from my previous institutes guide me to join JNCASR and it will be a big opportunity to pursue my career in JNCASR and I am really looking forward to it. |
